On Saturday, October 1, our bishop was invited to participate in a stereo radio broadcast on Nueva Vida de Nuca, Guatemala, which is transmitted from Los Angeles, California. A team of brothers originally from Nucá, now living in Los Angeles, have committed themselves to support the radio station, broadcasting a program Saturday afternoons. Monsignor Eduardo was invited to participate and, in view of the success of the broadcast, was asked to participate in the program whenever he is in the United States.

The program began with a fifteen-minute segment in which the bishop explained the nature of our Church. This was followed by a dialogue conducted through questions and comments that were received by internet from Guatemala, Florida, New York and California.

Present in the broadcast studio were brothers Tomás, Ronaldo, Ramón, Marcelino, and Mateo (who is responsible for the technological aspects of the actual transmission).

In this way, the radio audience can formulate various questions and receive responses to many of their religious concerns.

In late afternoon, Monsignor Eduardo began the celebration of the twelfth anniversary of the Pacto Divino Community by celebrating the Eucharist. The celebration continued in the form of a vigil until dawn.

The bishop’s celebration began with the administration of the sacrament of Reconciliation for all those present who wanted it.  After the communal confession of sins, each one individually received absolution from sin.

The homily focused on the Sunday readings, which spoke of the vineyard that the Lord planted and that did not bear the fruit anticipated (in the prophecy of Isaiah as well as in the Gospel of Matthew). The bishop brought out that precisely our Renewed Catholic Church has received from the Lord the mission of recognizing that the Lord is the only lord and keeper of his vineyard and that each of us, accepting an attitude of trust and service, must work so that the vineyard may produce an abundant harvest and fruits of good quality.

The bishop also connected the message of the readings with the unselfish, sacrificial work that the faithful members of this ministry, coordinated by brother Danilo, have consistently performed in the midst of difficulties and problems.

The spirituality that the entire community is living today is deep. Of course, the Eucharist constitutes the center of the celebration.

Praying the “Our Father” is a moment of special significance. From the homily the whole assembly was prepared to live out the deep feeling of love for all and of freedom from resentment, division, and hatred. That made everyone live out an experience of communion with the whole Church during the praying of the Lord’s Prayer.

The hall used for worship was completely filled. About three hundred faithful participated in the vigil and, most importantly, the spirit that inspired everyone was one of joy, of brotherhood, and of accepting a genuine commitment to effective evangelism.

In the evening the bishop visited the Restauración Community to celebrate Eucharist with them.

The faithful were very enthusiastic and took advantage of the bishop’s visit to renew their commitment to live their Christian faith in their entire being.

As always, the celebration began with the administration of the sacrament of Reconciliation for all who required it.

In all our communities, this moment is an opportunity to encounter God and to experience the merciful love that the Lord has for each of his children.

One of the issues that the bishop stressed is the importance of establishing a means of preparation so that all those who have not received the sacraments of Christian Initiation or of marriage may be come prepared to do so in order that they may participate fully in the ecclesial life.

On Sunday morning, October 2, the assembly of the servers of the San Miguel Renewed Catholic parish in Los Angeles took place.

During the first part of the meeting, Monsignor Eduardo invited  everyone to take cognizance of the fact that becoming a Renewed Catholic Parish implies becoming organized to offer all the services that pertain to a parish, which has not yet fully taken place.

The faithful felt moved to begin the necessary steps toward being organized and to accept the commitment to participate actively in this process, which will progressively be implemented.

During the dialogue several of the faithful described the difficulties that they are facing because of the mind-set, the lack of training for the leaders, and the limitations of time felt by many of the faithful.

The bishop promised to give the support necessary for them to be able to move the organizing process forward, and all the faithful promised to participate in the various ministries entrusted to them and to exercise them with dedication and efficacy.

The first step in the organization process was to establish a ministry of care and evangelism for children so that they could offer a Bible school to the children during Assembly meetings. Eight of the faithful promised to perform the ministry of catechists.

In addition the communion ministry was strengthened and it was decided that communion is to be distributed at every Assembly meeting. For that, in addition to the two ministers that they now have, three more were elected.

At the end of the Assembly, the celebration of the Sunday Eucharist began with the servers. In it the blessing and installation of the various ministers took place.

The context of the celebration  was a mood of deep faith and hope, because everyone had confidence that the plans would be carried out and in this way the life of the parish would take shape.

After the homily, all who were to receive a new ministry or renew one they already had knelt to pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

The prayer began with the short form of the Litany of the Saints.

When the common prayer installing the various ministers was over, the bishop prayed over and blessed each person who had received a ministry.

Brother Francisco was elected coordinator of the Communion Ministry.

Those who will exercise the ministry of preaching were also prayed for and blessed. They agreed that in the future they will hold conversations with one another so that each homily will have a place within the framework of progressive growth. The newest ministries are those of evangelism and catechists for the children. The coordinator of this ministry will be sister Magdalena, who is standing at the viewer’s right of the bishop. Sister María, who is at the other side of the bishop, offered to provide a tent that will be set up in the parking lot where sessions of instruction for the children can take place.

At midday on Thursday, October 13, the celebration of confirmation for ten seminarians who had not yet received this sacrament took place.

The ceremony was celebrated with solemnity. Co-celebrating were Fathers Juan Moisés (who also was organist and cantor), Francisco Simón (ProVicar General and co-pastor at the Cathedral) and Father Vicente Gómez, who had assisted Deacon Orlando López in preparing those who were confirmed.

After the homily, in which the bishop explained in detail the significance and commitments that are accepted on renewing or “confirming” chrismation and the anointing of the Holy Spirit, the bishop called each candidate by name and asked them if he was of his own will prepared to receive the gift of God in order to bear fruit in his life.

After each one had expressed his commitment, all the candidates knelt, their sponsors stood behind them, and the short form of the Litany of the Saints was sung.

The bishop anointed each of the confirmands, with the following words:  N., servant of God, you are marked with the sign of the cross and anointed with the chrism of salvation so that the gift of the Holy Spirit may be confirmed in you. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

After the chrismation, the bishop invoked the Holy Spirit a second time, asking that each of those anointed may remain a “temple of divine glory.”

When the liturgical ritual was complete, the confirmands knelt in front of their sponsors, who devoutly prayed for them, asking the Lord that they might be faithful to the promises they had made.

The seminarians confirmed were Jorge Francisco and Cristian (at the extreme left; not in the photograph), and from left to right: José Luís, Felipe Choc, Juan Arcadio, Diego, Alfonso, Carlos Alfredo, Jeremías, and Josué Adonay.

After the Eucharist, the celebration was closed by sharing dinner together.

On the afternoon of October 13, Monsignor Eduardo presided at the Eucharist of the Closing of the Academic Year in the “Nuestra Señora de la Precioísima Sangre” Girls Home, which is located in La Ciénega, San Raymundo, Guatemala.

The celebration took place in the chapel of the María Auxiliadora Finca, which is part of the complex that is to be the Church Chancellery sometime in the future.

The founder and director of the home is Sister of the Most Precious Blood, Mary Faye Hellman.

The ceremony began with the administration of the sacrament of Reconciliation for all those who wished to receive it. Right:  the bishop invoking the Holy Spirit before administering Absolution to those who had confessed their sins.

Two of the students who completed their studies this year, representing all the others, came forward to present the offering of bread and wine.

In addition to the students, the teaching personnel, members of other religious congregations and neighbors participated in the Eucharist.

Starting on Wednesday, October 13, a tropical depression devastated all Central America. There
were floods, mudslides and scores of deaths. Our communities expressed its solidarity with those who suffered by sharing goods and prayers.

The insecurity and the obstruction of many roads obliged Monsignor Eduardo to cancel promised pastoral visits in several communities, for it was impossible to get to them.

At the weekend of October 15-16, the seminarians’ weekend pastoral work came to an end.  This year pastoral work was carried out at the Huehuetenango DETYM (whose closing had to be postponed to the next weekend), Tzanixnam in Totonicapán; several communities in Sololá, Comalapa and San José Poaquil in Chimaltenango; Los Guates, Los Pirires, Los Caneles and Las Palmas in San Juan Sacatepéquez; Villalobos in Mixco; and several communities in the Department of Sacatepéquez and Guatemala City.

The mission of  the seminarians has two phases: first, learning the faith and life of the communities and, second, sharing with the communities the seminarians’ faith and the knowledge they have acquired so that they may grow in their Christian, Renewed Catholic Identity.

After the academic year ends on October 29, the seminarians will have eighteen days of pastoral missions in various communities in more remote areas. With that, the instruction of the current year is over and vacation begins.

On October 19, Monsignor Eduardo was in the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista to hold the second instruction workshop with the leaders of the various congregations of the parish who are committed to the Mission Campaign, “Living the Catholic Church that Was Born at Pentecost,” which will take place throughout the Church at the beginning of 2012.

The second workshop addressed the theme, “The Mission that Jesus Gave to the Apostles.” The instruction as well as the exercises that are done in the subsequent days are intended to inspire the faithful to accept the mission that Jesus gave his disciples as the same mission that today he gives to every one of the missionaries.

About three hundred missionaries are preparing themselves for this work.  The Fathers charged with pastoral work have also participated actively in each of the preparatory activities. Left:  Father Francisco thanking the participants and closing the session with prayer.

On Friday, October 21, the bishop began his missionary rounds by visiting the Pajomel Community in Santa Cruz La Laguna, Sololá. As always, the celebration began with the administration of the sacrament of Reconciliation for all those who felt called to participate in it.

During the celebration, the bishop stressed the importance of accepting radically the mission that the Lord has given us as a church.  He also stressed the importance of living in continuous prayer in order to be able to give witness to the presence of the Kingdom in our midst.

In late afternoon on October 21, the bishop celebrated the Eucharist with the Chuitzanchaj community, which is also in the municipality of Santa Cruz La Laguna, Sololá.

The faithful have progressively organized various ministries in order to participate with greater benefit in the liturgy. Among them is the ministry of reading the lessons.

In the homily the bishop reminded the faithful that to be aware of our mission means living to the fullest the one church that the Lord wanted to establish.  The sign that this church is living in this way is the transformed life and an active apostolic attitude.

On Saturday, October 22, the bishop visited the Central Todos Santos Cuchumatanes Community in Huehuetenango. During his visit, two children were initiated into Christian life.

The community has continued its process of solidifying its structure. It has sixteen families and a total of 158 members. The majority live in the middle of the town, but there are some families that come  from the neighboring villages.

During the ritual of Christian Initiation, the bishop emphasized the fundamental and indispensable role that parents play when children are initiated. Therefore he exhorted the parents to live their faith radically and persevere as active Renewed Catholics so that the sacrament administered to the children may truly benefit them.

On Saturday afternoon, October 22, our bishop visited the La Vega Community, Colotenango. 

The community is reached by driving down a dirt road next to the highway to Cuilco. During the rainy season, one leaves the vehicle at the bank of the Selegua River and walks across a suspension bridge over the river, and then walks to the church in the village center.

Because of good vegetable harvests and help from emigrants who have sent money back home, they have built a very handsome church. It is spacious and carefully appointed.

Now they have two goals: First, in terms of internal development to complete the processes necessary for buying instruments that will enable them to have a music ministry. 

Second, in terms of outreach, to begin an evangelism campaign that will reach throughout the municipality of Colotenango.

In the evening thirty of the faithful attended the closing session of DETYM (Theology and Ministerial Education for the People of God).

ather Pedro Martínez, pastor in Cuilco, came as a special guest. For two years, 2009 and 2010, he was the academic coordinator for what was then called the School of Theology and Ministerial Education. 

Father Pedro co-celebrated with the bishop, who presided at the Eucharist and the closing exercises and delivery of diplomas to those who had completed the educational program.

During the current year the responsibility for the instruction in DETYM was in the hands of seminarians José Alfredo Hernández (academic coordinator) and José Raúl López (financial coordinator). In addition, Father Juan Moisés was charged to give instruction in music.

On Sunday morning, October 23, Monsignor Eduardo came to the Huicá Community in the mountains of the municipality of La Libertad.

The principal reason for inviting the bishop was that a family coming from a non-Catholic church had converted. The parents wanted to celebrate matrimony and they wanted their four children to receive complete Christian Initiation.

The couple felt a special joy when, in the presence of the bishop and the community, they expressed their mutual matrimonial consent.

Each of the four siblings that were initiated into Christ Life received Baptism, then Chrismation, and then participated in Communion.

On Sunday afternoon, October 23, Monsignor Eduardo visited the Community of Zone 3 in Huehuetenango.

This community, which is coordinated by brother Leon from the San Antonio Las Nubes Community, Chiantla, has grown mightily since its founding a short time ago.

During the bishop’s visit, a family that had left the Catholic faith some time ago was received back into the Church and its three children were initiated into Christian Life through the administration of Baptism, Confirmation and Communion.

Afterwards, the little girls and then the whole People of God participated in the communion with the Body and Blood of the Lord.

On Wednesday, October 26, the presentation of conclusions from the seminarians’ final academic seminar took place. The seminar was coordinated by Deacon (now Presbyter) Orlando López. Seminarian Arturo Pedro was the Master of Ceremonies, and seminarians Luís Miguel Say, Maxi Eliseo and Diego Pedro were the presenters. All of them are in the photograph at left.

The seminar’s theme was the Pastoral Letters of our Bishop, Monsignor Doctor Eduardo Aguirre Oestmann.  The study enabled the seminarians to deepen their understanding of the identity and mission of our Church and to be trained to carry out competently the ministry that is entrusted to us.

After the presentation, the Eucharist was celebrated in Latin, as it is every Wednesday at the seminary, and then the seminarians joined in a lunch to celebrate the event.

On the afternoon of October 26 we had the joy of receiving several members of the Mexico Mission. The delegation was led by Father Nicolás Gómez de la Motta, Vicar General of the Mission.  In addition the Reverend Dionisio Montiel came, who, after two years of pastoral work, was incardinated into ICERGUA for service in ICREM (Renewed Catholic and Ecumenical Church of Mexico) and received the sacred orders of Deacon and Presbítero “ad cautelam” (“as a precaution”).

Among the visitors was Sr. Jesús, the representative of the Renewed Catholic Communities of Mexico, who was charged to present Dionisio on their behalf and to request his ordination. Another visitor was Father Antonio, whose arrival on Friday, October 28, made the delegation complete.

On the evening of October 26, within the framework of the celebration of Solemn Vespers, which is held every Wednesday in the seminary, Professor Dr. David Greene offered an organ concerto.  He can be seen in the background in the photograph at left.

Among the pieces played masterfully and fervently were works by Bach, Handel and Gounod. For everyone it was a time of spiritual elevation as well as musical delight.

On Thursday, October 27, the seminarians had their end-of-year retreat. In charge was Father Nicolás de Jesús Gómez de la Motta. The retreat began with a personalized reading of a series of people in the Bible. The objective was that the seminarians might learn to personalize their own response to God, identifying their limitations and possibilities.

The mood in which the retreat unfolded was one of deep serenity and prayer. At the end everyone showed how satisfied and grateful he was to Father Nicolás for the effort that he had made so that the retreat might reach their hearts and help them solidify their calling and their respect for the Lord.

In the evening the bishop presided at the Holy Liturgy in which the Reverend Dionisio Montiel was ordained deacon.

At the end of the questioning, the bishop asked the candidate:  Do you promise to maintain full communion and a spirit of collaboration and respect with me and my successors?

And the candidate, as a sign of his commitment to obedience and support, responded:  I promise.

During the singing of the Litany, the bishop implored the blessing, sanctification and consecration of him who was to receive the holy order:

That You may bless those chosen, we pray you, hear us.

That You may bless and sanctify those chosen, we pray you, hear us.

That You may bless and sanctify and consecrate those chosen, we pray you, hear us.

Receive the Holy Spirit that he may strengthen you, and may you resist the devil and his temptations, in the name of the Lord.

Send to him, Lord, the Holy Spirit that, strengthened with the seven gifts of your grace, he may carry out his ministry with faithfulness.

Receive the Gospel of Christ, of which you have been made the messenger; remember that you must believe the Word of God that you proclaim and make it the standard of your life.

On Friday afternoon, October 28, the meeting of the Presbytery took place in the Seminary in San Lucas Sacatepéquez.

During the meeting each of the presbyters described how he saw the pastoral situation in the area to which he had been assigned.

The general mood was extremely positive and optimistic.

The common denominator in the presbyters’ presentations was the strong growth that the Church continues to have.

Each month over the course of the year an average of five new communities have made a covenant with us. That means the during the year the number of communities in the Church has been augmented by about fifty.  Of these, there are some that consist of only a few families, but there are others that have as many as eight hundred members.

The bishop reported on the new mission in Venezuela, which has over 10,000 members, who are pastorally tended by Father José Roberto Aguirre Lima.

The Monsignor also reported on the Church’s ongoing dialogues with other churches.

The meeting ended with the celebration of Solemn Vespers in honor of the Apostles Simón and Judas and the blessing with the Most Holy Sacrament.

On Saturday, October 29, in the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista in Comalapa the fourth anniversary of having been born as the sacramental presence of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church was celebrated. In addition three presbyters were ordained.

The celebration in which the entire Presbytery of ICERGUA participated, except for Father Fredy González, who was ill, included the participation of thousands of the faithful, representatives of many of the communities that comprise our Church.

The entrance procession was led by all the seminarians who, as always, conclude their academic year with this Eucharist and after the celebration leave for twenty days of missionary pastoral work. Ten seminarians went to the Parish of Santa Cruz Barillas, four to Jacaltenango and Santa María Chiquimula, two to Nucá and San Mateo Ixtatán, two to Nentón, two to Santa Eulalia, two to Soloma, two to San Rafael La Independencia, two to Cuilco, two to Nebaj and Chajul, two to Uspantán, and one went with the bishop on his pastoral work.

During the homily the bishop recalled what it means for us to have become the sacramental presence of the Church and the corresponding commitment entailed in that, especially for those whom we have chosen to exercise the ordained ministry.

After the homily the questioning of candidates for presbyterial ordination took place, and then the Litany of the Saints was sung, during which the three candidates lay prostrate.

Following the first part of the consecrating prayer, the center of the rite consists of the laying on of hands and the corresponding prayer:

Receive the Holy Spirit, so that He may consecrate you and strengthen you.

Almighty God, we ask that by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit you may confer on these your servants the order of presbyter, renew in their hearts the spirit of sanctity that they may receive from you the second level of ministerial priesthood and may by their conduct be a living example for all.

Following the consecratory prayer, we pray:  May they be zealous  collaborators with the bishops so that by their preaching and with the grace of the Holy Spirit the Word of the Gospel may bear fruit in the heart of those who hear them, and may be proclaimed to the ends of the earth.

May they be faithful channels of your mysteries so that your People may be renewed with the bath of the new birth and nourished from your altar so that sinners may be reconciled and the ill comforted.

May they, in communion with us, Lord, implore your lovingkindness for the People that you have entrusted to them and the whole world. So that the nations, gathered in Christ, may form your one People in manifesting your Kingdom. For the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who live and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit and is God forever and ever.

Another crucial moment is the anointing of hands with the holy oil of the catechumens.

First, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is invoked with the following:

O Lord, be pleased to send your Holy Spirit over these sons that have been ordained presbyters in order that through the anointing with oil and our blessing their hands may be consecrated and sanctified so that all whom they bless may be blessed and all that the consecrate may be consecrated. We ask you this for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.

And then, upon the anointing of the hands of each one, it is prayed:

May Jesus Christ the Lord, whom the Father anointed with the power of the Holy Spirit, assist you in order to sanctify the Christian People and offer to God the perfect sacrifice for the sake of the salvation of all humankind.

Finally, the Eucharistic celebration proceeds, co-celebrated by the all the presbyters, as can be seen in the photograph at left.

Among the thousands of people in attendance, special note should be taken of the ancestral authorities of San Juan Comalapa (seated in the center row in the photograph at right) and the sisters who serve at the Seminary:  Isabel, Reina and Sabina, seated in the first row in the photograph at right.

At the end of the celebration, each of the new presbyters gave a greeting of gratitude to all those in attendance.

The three ordained presbyters were:  Orlando López from Mataquescuintla, Jalapa, who did his pastoral field work at the Seminary; Yaider Jiménez from Guajira, Columbia, who did his field work in San Pedro Necta and La Democracia, Huehuetenango (he is addressing the People of God in the photograph at left), and Dionisio Montiel García from the Mexico Mission.

On Sunday afternoon, October 31, Monsignor Eduardo presided at the celebration of the Eucharist in the Santísima Trinidad Parish of San Miguel Uspantán.  Co-celebrants were Fathers Denis Obando, pastor of the Uspantán community, and Bernabé Mateo, pastor in Cunén and the San José Quicabaj Parish.

During the Eucharist three brothers received their missionary assignment through the administration of the sacrament of Confirmation: Two of them—Lucas and Diego--come from La Zona Reina in the north of the municipality, and the other—Osvaldo—lives in the neighborhood of the parish headquarters.

The ceremony was charged with deep spiritual feeling and emotion.  After they received communion, Father Denis lit the candle each was holding as a sign of their missionary commitment.

In the evening the regional Deanery, consisting of the Uspantán Parish and of the central pastorates of Chamá Grande, Cobán (in Alta Verapaz), of San Marcos el Triunfo, of la Zona Reina, of Chicamán, and of Uspantán (in El Quiché).

Brother Santiago is the pastoral coordinator of the Center of San Marcos el Triunfo.  He also described the strong growth that has occurred this year and the steps that are being taken for it also to be constituted as a parish in the near future.

Then the bishop gave instruction which, during 2012, will turn on the theme, “Living Out the Catholic Church that was Born on the Day of Pentecost.”

On the morning of October 31, the Deanery of the Communities of Cunén and Sacapulas was celebrated.

Each of the coordinators described the work of the recent months.  All the communities have experienced growth, some of them moderate, some of them strong, but all are growing and reaffirming their identity.

As in Uspantán, after the delegates and the presbyter had made their reports, the bishop offered instruction on the same theme that will be addressed during the course of the coming year.

All the faithful accepted the commitment to internalize the material that has been shared with them to be able to commence authentic missionary work.

In the afternoon the bishop visited the La Hacienda Community in the municipality of Cunén.

As part of the visit, some of the faithful were initiated into Christian Life and others received their missionary charge through the administration of the sacrament of Confirmation.

The children that received Christian Initiation are the children of some members who have recently converted and joined the Church.

The confirmands ended with the ritual that enables them to be missionaries by giving witness to the Kingdom of God in the midst of all their brothers and sisters.

In late afternoon, Monsignor Eduardo celebrated the Eucharist with the Renewed Catholic Community of Tierra Caliente Sacapulas.

Those participating in the Eucharist had prepared themselves appropriately through the sacrament of Reconciliation before the celebration began.  That made it possible for the large majority of those present to come forward to commune with the Body and Blood of the Lord.
